investigators very busy at this hour trying to figure out if an arsonist is to blame for three suspicious fires overnight, including one outside of a school and another one that damaged up a strip mall. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live from antioch with the latest on what looks to be very suspicious out there. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, jon. we moved to the street side of that strip mall so you can get a different angle of the fire. it burned grass and trees all the way up to the side of the building. this is on sycamore and l streets in antioch. it started last night around 10:40. police saw flames coming from the back of the building. they called in firefighters and noticed that there were actually two fires happening at the exact same strip mall, different sides of the building, though. this jumped to two alarms of the most of the damage on the outside wall and the eaves by a dollar-type store. only an hour earlier, a few blocks away at 18th and l,

another fire. this one by antioch high school in a tree. arson investigators called in, saying that it definitely looks suspicious, timing and distance, and at this point it's starting to look like arson. reporting live in antioch, christie smith, "today in the bay." the latest now on a developing story that started in northern africa and is spreading throughout the muslim world. right now giving you a live look at cairo, where protesters continue rallying outside of the american embassy. they're angry about an anti-islam film produced right near america. egyptian riot police have fired tear gas at the crowd repeatedly to try to break up the protests. we're told at least 200 people have been injured in the last few days alone. now, similar anti-american protests are now being reported in other countries worldwide after new rumors spread that the controversial video had been shown on american tv. in kashmir, hundreds of people tried to march in protest today but were stopped by heavily armed police.

more protests are expected in that area later today. meantime, much larger protests are also expected across north america and other parts of the middle east later today. in libya, the unrest continues as the airspace above the city of benghazi is now a no-fly zone for at least 48 hours. authorities only say at this point the airspace has been shut down due to unspecified security fears. libya's prime minister says now four people have been arrested in connection with tuesday's deadly attack on the american embassy. at this point no formal charges have been filed. u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed during the attack. this morning we're also learning more about those three other americans killed in the embassy attack. the state department says two former navy s.e.a.l.s, tyrone woods and glen doherty, seen here, tied while providing security at the consulate. both were long-time residents of san diego county. woods was the father of three as

well as a registered nurse and paramedic. doherty was also a paramedic and had previously protected americans in iraq and afghanistan and elsewhere. diplomat sean smith was the father of two and also an avid online gamer. in fact the director of one online gaming guild says smith sent him a message before the attacks saying, quote, assuming we don't die tonight, we saw one of our police that guard the compound taking pictures. the gaming director says smith wrote, quote, gunfire on the messaging service jabber before diskickiconnecting disconnecting. he never returned. evolving from victim to victim's advocatadvocate. a bay area bhoon says he was molested by a man as a child is turning his anger into action. will lynch made headlines when he beat the man he said raped him when he was just 7 years old. lynch said he spent years considering criminal charges

against jerry lindner for rape but couldn't file them because the statute of limitations had expired. now lynch is trying to change that law so other sexual assault victims can actually hold their abusers accountable years after the crime. >> if we can repeal the statute of limitations in this country and people can stand behind that, i think that would help a lot of people who have already been affected and absolutely help the children in the future. >> a san jose jury acquitted lynch on assault charges back in july. he expects it will now take millions of dollars just to get voters to approve a ballot measure extending the statute of limitations. he is holding his very first fund-raiser this sunday in los altos. big questions remain this morning involving another molestation case, this time at a san jose catholic high school involving a jesuit brother. brother william fairington was a teacher in san jose in the '60s. the bay area news group reports he then went to the sacramento area where he was a teacher, a counselor and a swim coach at a

jesuit high school in carmichael. he left the school following two reports of unidentified misconduct. recently we learned that a grad had accused him of abusing him. investigators want to know why he was able to move from school to school for so many years. a jesuit spokesperson said they never knew of the incidents until 2003. meantime in vallejo, there are new questions about police tactics this morning after another officer-involved shooting, the latest shooting happening last night. vallejo police started to chase after a truck refused to pull over. the suspects ultimately crashed on the campus of oaks elementary school in pleasant hill. investigators say as police approached that suspect after the crash, one of these men made a threatening move and the officer fired at him. nobody was hit. instead the bullet struck one of the school walls. there have been eight officer-involved shootings in vallejo this year alone. five of those shootings have been fatal. well, a woman left fighting

for her life after being run down on a walnut creek sidewalk is now said to be improving. doctors say sheng hahn is now listed in fair condition. she was badly hurt saturday when a speeding pickup slammed into her and her family. hahn's mother-in-law was killed in that accident. the truck's driver, seen here, hossein tabrizi, has not been charged. police continue to investigate the crash and say they will submit the case to the district attorney soon. we have new details this morning uncovered after a fire at a menlo park school. firefighters there say yesterday's blaze at beechwood school was a bigger problem actually than it should have been. that's because that fire started in a temporary building that was not -- it was not equipped with a monitor, fire alarm or a sprinkler system. now, this type of building is not required to have one, but officials say it really could have knocked down much of that fire and helped them knock this out much sooner. the fire burned for about two hours causing $300,000 in

to leave their droppings all over the place. so what b.a.r.t. is going to do is spend a million dollars on new infrastructure at some of its above-ground b.a.r.t. stations. namely they're talking about metal siding, that would be at an angle to make it much more difficult for these birds to perch and also add more of those metal spikes because those do seem to be somewhat effective. they'd be targeting primarily four b.a.r.t. stations, coma, pleasant hill, concord and daly city b.a.r.t. where this problem is just huge for riders. >> i think it's money worth spending because pigeon feces every why here at the b.a.r.t. station. right above your head sometimes. >> reporter: have you ever been hit? >> i dodge it pretty good. >> reporter: you've got skills after all these years? >> after all these years, i'm a regular b.a.r.t. patron so i ride it every day. yeah, i developed pretty good basic skills. >> you find a lot of feces laying around. you put your hand on the rail

bay area.com and search aadp. all right. good friday morning, everybody. if you happen to be waking up with us right now, here's a quick check on the day's top stories. arson investigators at this hour taking a look at three suspicious fires that happened less than an hour apart in antioch. two of those fires were set at the very same strip mall on sycamore drive. the third was just outside of a nearby school. a walnut creek woman left fighting for her life after being hit by a truck is said to be getting a little bit better this morning. her condition has been updated from critical to fair. the woman was on a sidewalk when a truck jumped the curb hitting her and killing her mother-in-law. and b.a.r.t. says it is now spending $1 million of its surplus budget to try and deal with a lot of pigeons out there and all their nasty droppings at the stations. the agency will install new metal barriers at stations in hopes of keeping those pigeons from perching. new this morning, an

influential japanese panel is calling for the country to phase out nuclear power. the recommendation comes as the group is reviewing japan's energy policies following the fukushima nuclear disaster set off by a massive earthquake and tsunami. the cabinet is calling for nuclear power to be phased out by the 2030s. an update now to a developing story in egypt where protesters continue to rally outside the american embassy in cairo. here is a live look as the day goes on. the demonstrations are expected to get even bigger. >> now, those protests are big news, of course, on the campaign trail as president obama and mitt romney both go back and forth on how the u.s. is handling this unfolding crisis overseas. tracie potts is live on capitol hill and she has all the latest updates. good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. let's take another look at those live pictures from cairo because you're right, it is unfolding. we're seeing more people gather there, although not as violent as we have seen in the past.

also this morning, reports of people gathering in yemen, indonesia, people expected there. kashmir, sudan, jordan, a number of places we're starting to see become more active. in egypt overnight, much more violen violence, tear gas, rocks being thrown at police there as all of these protesters are demonstrating against that internet video that they say was insulting to muslims. now, as we look forward today, a lot of republican reaction to this here on the hill, on the campaign trail, they're using it as an opportunity to critique the obama administration's policy. >> the world needs american leadership. >> this is all about american weakness and the president's inability to lead. >> reporter: the president says he wants to bring to justice the people in libya who killed our ambassador there and amid protests in that country as well as three other americans, four arrests have been made there. they are looking for more people

retailers, because it meant everything was at least 8% cheaper on amazon and i know l is an accountant out there somewhere right now who is sputtering into his cereal saying you have to pay sales tax already. that's true. when you buy something from a catalog or website that doesn't charge state sales tax on checkout, you should make a note of it and then report that sale to the state of california at the end of the year and send sacramento a check. i'm sure you do. speaking of stuff to buy, iphone 5 went on presale at midnight last night. those who stayed up late enough report at&t and other sites were knocked offline. this morning the apple site says it's run out of phones for delivery on the 24th, so anything you buy today will come in early october. while you're buying an iphone, the fed will start buying $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities. it's going to buy $40 billion more next month and so on. the fed is injecting more money into the economy by taking

bundles of mortgages that investors own and turning those bundles back into money. now, wall street has been waiting a long time for qe-3. stocks jumped on that news. i want you to ignore it. the stock market and the economy are not the same thing, just like a they remember meerrmomet same as the weather. the fed is not supposed to care at what the stock market does. we were at a four-year high before the announcement. the fed cares about inflation and employment. the inflation is under control but it's the employment issue they're trying to address with this third round and we'll see what they can do. jon and marla. >> we'll see if that big infusion of cash helps the jobs. great for wall street, can it help the people on the street. >> the stock market cares about what the fed does, that's for sure. >> we saw that, big jump. >> and we're going to jump your temperatures as we head through saturday, but not too hot, not too hot at all when you consider it's the last weekend of summer, the last full weekend. fall is coming in quickly and

a strip mall. this is on sycamore and l streets in antioch. it started around 10:40. police saw flames pouring from the back of the property. firefighters called in. turns out that it was actually two fires burning on opposite sides of the strip mall here. this jumped to two alarms really quickly. most of the damage outside of a dollar store. but just an hour earlier, a few blocks away, there was another fire in a tree by antioch high school. >> fire on the northwest side of the building and then we did have another additional exterior fire on the southeast side of the building. approximately an hour before that there was a fire down the street on sycamore. so we do have an investigator en route to take some time investigating. >> reporter: the firefighters are saying considering time and distance it certainly is suspicious and is looking like arson, but it is still under investigation. reporting live in antioch, christie smith, "today in the

stevens' sister. back here in the bay area, 6:33, a vigil will be held tonight for the milpitas convenience store clerk gunned down while at work. at 8:00 dozens of people are expected to gather at the 7-eleven on milpitas boulevard to pay their respects to mohammed reza. surveillance photos released by police show three hooded gunmen running into the store. seconds later the men shot reza, killing him. officers are still looking for the gunmen. this was milpitas' first homicide of the year and happened just two blocks from the city's police station. stanford university on alert this morning issuing a new warning to students after a woman is groped on campus. the student told police she was walking near manzanita field wednesday at about 1:30 when a man came up from behind her and groped her. that man ran off. two similar groping incidents happened in palo alto late last

month. at this point police have not said if they are linking this week's incident to last month'. if you see any suspicious behavior on criminal activity there, you are asked to call stanford police. it is unlike any dear john letter you've heard before and it's part of a prostitution crackdown in oakland that's getting a big show of support today. tonight hundreds of people are expected to gather on 17th avenue at international boulevard to launch this dear john letter campaign. it's aimed at customers of the sex trade. here's how it works. neighbors write down the license plate numbers of cars seen parking in this area and turn that into police. oakland police then send letters to the owners of the cars saying their vehicles were spotted in an area known for prostitution. the letters don't accuse the drivers of a crime but do emphasize the city's strict laws on prostitution. crews are out in force this morning very busy mopping up after a fire erupted in the very same oakland hills neighborhood

that was destroyed 1 years21 ye in a massive blaze. last night a house burned again. that fire broke out about 6:00 on norfolk road near westmoreland drive. it took firefighters around 90 minutes to control the blaze and huge plumes all over that of smoke could be seen for miles. for some people, that fire took them right back two decades when a small grass fire turned into a major inferno, leaving 25 people dead. >> it's unsettling for everyone. you just look at the people around the street. it's good they got here in time before it started to jump. >> i'm very happy to report nobody has hurt during last night's fire and that cause remains under investigation this morning. welcome to friday, it's 6:35. it's go ahead and check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. we're close to 60 degrees right here in san jose.

happening right now, this one was quite the wakeup call. thousands of villagers waking up to a roar as a volcano explodes in guatemala. right now how about this, 33,000 people in 17 different communities evacuating as it erupts near antigua. look at the thick clouds there, the ash reducing visibility to ten feet in some of those areas. that is seriously thick.

and emergency shelters have been set up for evacuees in all of the surrounding areas. new this morning, 51 people are dead after a bus an truck collide and then burst into flames in kabul. afghan police are still removing those killed from the wreckage. it's possible that several people survived the crash, though it's unclear if either driver made it out alive. the cause is still under investigation. we have an update for you to that developing story overseas in cairo. protesters out in force again today. it's all escalating there. they continue to show their anger over an anti-muslim video produced here in the united states. egyptian police have used tear gas over and over just trying to control these crowds. even bigger protests are expected today after friday's prayers. similar protests spreading throughout the muslim world. in kashmir, hundreds of people tried to march there. this was in protest today. but they were stopped there by heavily armed police.

meantime in libya, a no-fly zone right now has been declared in that airspace over benghazi after an american ambassador and three other americans were killed in an attack on tuesday. the country's prime minister says four people are now under arrest in connection with those attacks, but at this point no formal charges have been filed. jon just mentioned that u.s. ambassador, his family, the family of chris stevens is in washington, d.c., as they wait for his body to return to the u.s. and now stevens' younger sister is speaking out exclusively on "rock center with brian williams." >> he talked a little bit about the security but he really didn't make a big deal of it. he more spoke of how much he enjoyed the work that he was doing and the diplomatic mission that he was on. >> 52-year-old chris stevens grew up in the bay area. he went to piedmont high school and then to uc berkeley and uc hastings. this morning another visitor to yosemite national park

recovering after becoming the ninth person diagnosed with the deadly hantavirus. the virus has now killed three people since mid-june. all but one of the eight victims stayed in the signature tent cabins where deer mice were apparently nesting in the plywood walls. now, this latest case, this one is different and it was considered a hantavirus infection and not the full virus. several people in one south bay city are being told to boil their tap water for the next few days. the california department of public health says people living in the jackson oaks area of morgan hill need to boil their water all this weekend or use bottled water. it is a safety precaution after a pipeline failed in that area. the city is testing the water but won't have the results until next week. six:47 right now. this morning there's a new warning that government red tape is preventing repairs to san

francisco's gas pipeline. state utility regulators say 43 miles of old cast iron pipes pose a danger. in a letter to the city attorney, the cpuc claims pg&e wants to replace the lines but the city department of public works will not let the utility fini finish. they have a paving ordinance going on. now, in response to the accusations, city attorney dennis herrera says he shares those safety concerns and he wants to try to determine what's holding up this process. well, it's certainly going to be a good weekend to head to the beach. warm temperatures in store for us here in the bay area. >> yeah, and if you want to stay indoors, you can be like jon kelley and glue yourself to the couch. you're going to watch some football this weekend, let's face it. nice cool beverage. you've got a good plan because we've got those 49ers, oh, yeah, they're taking it to candlestick park on sunday. if you don't have tickets to that game, don't worry about it.

among them, a fire near a school and another that damaged a strip mall. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us now from antioch. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. the worst of the damage is on the street side of the strip mall. it burned all the way up to the roof, burned bushes and a tree out here. there are crews out here now working to clean up some of the damage. this is just one fire. when firefighters arrived, they saw smoke and flames and realized that this was actually two different fires burning on the exact same property. opposite sides, though. started around 10:40 last night, turned into a two-alarm fire. what makes this really odd, though, is that about an hour earlier just a few blocks away near antioch high school, there was a tree that caught fire. this is all under investigation. but firefighters say it certainly looks suspicious and looks like it could be arson. reporting live in antioch, christie smith, "today in the bay." abused, neglected and left

for dead. this morning a morgan hill pit bull is now looking for a little bit of love and a brand new permanent home. the dog's name is champ. no, he can't see that toy he's chewing on because he is blind. emily found the dog tied to a fence at a san jose elementary school with a computer cable wrapped around his neck. the animal was in very bad condition. the vet -- unfortunately they were forced to remove his eyes and they say this one for champ was a clear case of abuse. >> they should definitely, i feel, be put away. it's a crime. it's total neglect. and i think they should be treated just like you would if you neglected a child. >> a lot of supporters, including the san jose animal advocates, have now started a facebook page, creating some buzz, and they're hoping this bi will lead to a permanent home for champ. we are learning this morning that occupy oakland was tracked by the fbi. the american civil liberties union has obtained documents

that show the fbi was keeping close tabs on the occupy movement last year, especially during the west coast ports protest. the same documents show how the fbi planned to deal with the ports protest and possible occupy oakland action at the oakland airport. the aclu says the fbi has more documents, but is refusing to release them, citing national security. the recent surge in b.a.r.t. riders has actually given the agency millions in revenue that it did not expect and now the agency says it is ready to spend $1 million to declare war on pigeons and a war on all those droppings they leave behind.
